Hair loss and depression – Breaking the connection


Permanent hair loss that is caused by a hereditary sensitivity to DHT (aka male pattern baldness), can have a devastating effect on a man’s self-image and mood.

Hair is associated with strength and power in our society, and the loss of it is associated with aging and reminds us of our mortality. Because of this, the thought of going bald and losing all that full hair can cause severe depression and anxiety.

Fortunately, both hair loss and depression can be treated, or at least reduced, by applying some of the following tips.

Keep things in proportion

As much as seeing your hair fall out in large amounts each and every day can be frustrating, remember that it’s only hair that your are losing. There are so many more important things in life than hair. I know this sounds like a cliche, but it’s absolutely true!

The pain you feel is caused by your thoughts about your hair loss more than the hair loss itself. These negative thoughts tend to be completely false and out of proportion! Try to be aware of them as they arise, and know that you have the power within you to resist these thoughts and to change how you react to them.

Be changing your perception, these harmful thoughts will have less effect on you and you will instead be able to let good thoughts into your mind.

Be thankful for the good things you have in your life

One way to let good thoughts into your mind is to appreciate the good things in your life. Whether it’s your loved ones – your family or spouse, your friends, or perhaps your health, your career path, your hobbies, or something else. I am sure you can find something more valuable to you than your hair.

Focus on these things and be grateful for them, and see how your mood starts to improve.

The majority of men will suffer from hair loss at some point in their life, so you’re in good company. It is a normal part of being a male and there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of! Many men accept hair loss and with time come to terms with it.

Start treating hair loss

If hair loss concerns you and you are left feeling down about it, then is nothing better to do then start treating it! Fortunately, there are many good hair loss treatments available today than haven’t always been available.

The two most common and FDA approved male pattern baldness treatments are Minoxidil and Finasteride. They are both great for slowing down or stopping hair loss, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

If your hair loss is at an advanced stage where you feel that traditional treatments won’t be effective, you might want to consider a hair transplant procedure. Although it is much more expensive, the advantages of a hair transplant are that it can restore a lot of hair – even if you are completely bald, and the fact that it does not require constant daily use like minoxidil and finasteride. A hair transplant procedure will usually be done once or twice.

Another option is to start taking natural supplements that reduce DHT levels and slow down baldness.

By starting treatment, you will not only improve your balding condition, you will also be taking a proactive approach to dealing with this problem instead of dwelling in thoughts, and as a result you will feel much better.

Educate yourself

By reading about the causes of male pattern baldness and the latest advances in male pattern baldness treatments, you will have a better understanding of what you are dealing with. You will also likely feel a bit more hopeful and optimistic that perhaps one day the balding problem will finally be solved! This too can significantly elevate your mood!

By educating yourself on the topic, you will also distract your mind from depressing thoughts and will instead focus on solutions to the problem.

Compensate by developing other qualities

Many men who start balding get an extra motivation to hit the gym and improve their overall physical health. Building muscle and endurance is not only great for your physical and mental health, it can also greatly improve your self-image and compensate for balding.

Learning a new skill or hobby can also have the same healing effect on your self-image. So come on, what are you waiting for?

Final thoughts

Dealing with baldness is hard, I know. Trust me.

Over the years I have learned to accept the fact that I’m slowly balding, and I stopped being so anxious and worried about it like I used to. Stopping baldness is still important to me, but it has much less effect on my mood and self-image.

I believe that there are many reasons to be optimistic for hair loss sufferers, since great treatments are already available today, and many other new treatments will probably be available in the next few years.

Always remember that there are far greater and more important things in life than hair loss, and I hope some of the tips I wrote here will be helpful for you.

  1. This post is right on target! Especially for me as I started going bald in my late 30s.
    I tried Rogaine when it first came out with no luck.
    Then, someone shaved my head at a drunk party. After that the girls wanted to rub my head when I went out.
    Been bald ever since.
    You did great research on the site.
    It’s not too cluttered with links or pictures.
    I really liked how you linked some of the words to your other pages.
    I couldn’t find a link to the Sawgrass that you brought up.

  2. This goes hand in hand with so many of the things I try and share with people! Mental health is SO important and the negative impacts it can have on your body are CRAZY. That doesn’t mean people should feel ashamed of embarrassed of the things they can’t control! Treatment is SO important for those people who want to just feel like themselves again, and there is NO shame in that!

    I also agree that there are so many greater things in life and I wish for no one to feel as though their hair loss controls them.
