Kirkland Minoxidil Foam 5% – Product Overview
I have been using Kirkland Minoxidil Foam as my daily treatment to stop hair loss since 2011, and I can say that it has definitely helped me a lot.
I apply it every morning on my head, massage it with my fingers (so that it’s absorbed in the scalp) and repeat this process again in the evening. It takes me no more than 2 minutes to get it done.
The active ingredient in Kirkland Minoxidil Foam is – Minoxidil. It is not exactly known how Minoxidil works, but it is believed that Minoxidil functions as a vasodilator – it increases blood circulation around hair follicles by relaxing the blood vessels in the scalp, which in turn helps the hair grow longer and spend more time in the anagen phase (active growth phase) instead of in the telogen (resting) or catagen (holding) phase. Having more follicles in the growth stage at once leads to a denser and healthier hair.
Minoxidil was approved by the FDA as a treatment for male pattern baldness in 1988, and it has been a very popular treatment since then. About 40% of men experience hair regrowth after 3–6 months of using it.
The different versions of Minoxidil
This product is also available in a liquid solution, but I personally prefer the foam version since it dries out much faster (about 10 minutes) than the liquid, and it is easier to apply.
Another important and crucial difference for me is the fact that the liquid version may cause scalp irritation, redness, and itching. The irritation is a result of a compound called propylene glycol, an ingredient which helps the scalp absorb the active ingredient minoxidil.
The foam version does not contain propylene glycol and as a result does not cause any scalp irritation. I personally experienced severe itching with the liquid version, and had absolutely no issues with the foam.
Slowing down male pattern baldness, not stopping it completely
Minoxidil foam has significantly slowed down my hair loss from progressing. I believe that if I hadn’t been using it, I would be almost bald by now. I started using it after I stopped taking Propecia for 3 years because of its side effects, and the transition was really easy.
Unfortunately though, minoxidil is not a cure for baldness and it can’t stop the balding process completely. That’s because it doesn’t reduce DHT levels in the scalp, which are the main cause of male pattern baldness. It helps the hair follicles survive despite the damaging effects of DHT.
In my first 4 years of using minoxidil it almost completely stopped my hair loss. But over time its effect has somewhat weakened, so I started adding natural supplements to reduce DHT levels as well.
Minoxidil works best in patients who have only recently started experiencing male pattern baldness and still have a lot of hair left. It starts to be less effective after a few years, and hair loss resumes but at a slower rate.
Pros and Cons of Minoxidil Foam
- Significantly slows down hair loss and even regrows hair in about 40% of men
- Is easy to apply
- Dries out very quickly
- Easy to get, no need for a doctor’s perscription
- Has no side effects
- You need to use it every day, twice, for the rest of your life. If you stop, hair loss will continue and new hair will fall out.
- Not as effective for advanced hair loss. It works best in the first few years, then slowly starts to be less effective. It also won’t regrow hair in bald spots
- It takes a few months before seeing results. Hair shedding is expected in the first two weeks of using minoxidil. Shedding occurs because the newly growing follicles push out the older hairs. After shedding stops it can take a few more months until new hair grows.
Overall, Minoxidil Foam is great
I believe this product is a MUST if you are suffering from male pattern baldness and you aren’t interested in taking Propecia because of its sexual side effects.
One definite drawback is the need to apply it every day for the rest of your life, but I believe it is worth the effort if it stops or slows down hair loss.
Overall I would give this product an 8/10 rating since it does a great job of maintaining hair and regrowing some. The downside is the fact that it slowly starts to be less effective over time and it doesn’t regrow hair in bald men.
If this sounds good enough for you, I highly recommend you pick your own Minoxidil Foam. I found that Ebay has the best deals for this product. For 63.99$ you get a 6 month pack of the product, and if you want to see any result I recommend you use minoxidil for at least 6 months.
